The
Hoosier Creek Watershed Project
The Hoosier Creek Watershed in Linn County is 14,891 acres in size. The watershed is generally located in the townships of Putnam and College in southern Linn and northern Johnson Counties. The Hoosier Creek drains into the Coralville Reservoir of the Iowa River in Johnson County. The watershed continues to urbanize rapidly. Currently, there is a major airport, school district, community college, large public golf course, as well as several large businesses and neighborhood developments. The land use in the area: 10,500 acres of Cropland, 1,500 acres of Pastureland, 350 acres of Woodland, 2,500 acres of Urban/Transportation. Rapid development of the watershed has occurred and continues to occur, due to the convenient location between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. This development increases the surface runoff amount and intensity throughout the watershed because of additional impervious surfaces (parking lots, roofs, roads, etc...). Hoosier Creek Watershed Objectives and Goals: Protect Water Quality Improve water retention in uplands for both rural and urban areas Safeguard important natural resources, i.e. wetlands Provide specific opportunities for individual actions within the watershed Provide a comprehensive educational program to the region regarding watershed conservation Cost Share Opportunities for Conservation Practices: Eligible Practices:
